Westminster Spotlight: Cross Country Star Jessie Kuykendall

Jessie Kuykendall, a senior exercise science and health psychology major, made St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference cross country history with her third consecutive conference title on Oct. 27, 2018.  Kuykendall is highly decorated in awards around the SLIAC Conference, including 11 career Runner of the Week Awards.  She is known around Westminster’s campus as “the girl who can freakin’ run,” says Jonathan Ruzzo, ’20.  However, her story does not end at her running ability.  Jessie is also an integral member of the Westminster community and has goals for after college.

Blue Jay Football Home the Win in New Stadium

A new stadium in Blue Jay Nation was opened with a win against Iowa Weslyan on Saturday, Sept. 15. Before the players took the field, a tunnel was formed near the end zone by alumni and students to welcome the members of the football team to their new field. Westminster Cheerleaders held a sign that read “Thank You Kent and Judy!” for the donors of the field, Kent and Judy Mueller.  President Lamkin addressed the crowd and read a message from Kent Mueller to those in attendance.

Blue Jays Men’s Golf Ends Season at Conference Tournament

The Blue Jay’s golf team finished in 6th place at the SLIAC conference championship on April 23 and 24 in Staunton, Illinois. The tournament was held at Timber Lakes Golf Course. Staunton had heavy rains in the days leading up to the tournament, which made for wet conditions for the players both days.

Westminster Baseball Rides Five Game Win Streak

Westminster Baseball had a successful week in conference play after sweeping both Blackburn College and Iowa Wesleyan. After the two huge conference series sweeps, Blue Jay Baseball improved to 11-8 on the season with a 6-2 record in SLIAC conference play.

Blue Jay’s Baseball Team Loses Ace Pitcher

The Blue Jay’s baseball team will be without Sophomore pitcher Sam Huesgen for the entirety of the 2018 season after he suffered a torn light labrum. Last year, Huesgen finished second on the team with seven wins. He led all starting pitchers in earned run average with a 2.57. He earned the award of SLIAC newcomer of the year and was a Second-Team All-Conference player.

Spring break was a travel week for Westminster Blue Jay softball, baseball, and lacrosse. The teams travelled to different parts of the country, each spending a week in a destination with better weather than in Missouri.

Over the past two weeks the Westminster Blue Jay track and field team has competed in two indoor meets. The team traveled to conference opponent, Principia College, on Jan. 27 and to Illinois College on Feb. 3.
