Westminster’s Backer Dining Hall is often known for being predictable and having limited options. However, recent additions to the Fresh Ideas’ staff have brought promising changes to the dining hall service.

The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) announced earlier this month that Westminster finished first in a conference-wide fundraising competition for the American Cancer Society. Westminster collected nearly $1,800, while Fontbonne University finished second with over $800. The $1,800 raised accounts for almost two-thirds of the $2,739 raised by all 10 SLIAC schools.

This year’s African Formal’s theme was “Made in Africa.” The event took place last Saturday at 6 p.m in Backer Dining Hall. The two previous African Formals before had the theme of bringing all students together and sharing their cultures. However, according to African Union Organization President David Immanuel, ’17, whose group sponsored the event, “It was time that we showed the essentials of Africa”

The Undergraduate Scholars Forum is a yearly event highlighting undergraduate student achievement at Westminster, Westminster’s website says. Featuring presentations by more than 150 students representing nearly every department on campus, the forum allows faculty, staff, alumni and trustees to recognize the scholarship taking place at Westminster and celebrate the students’ work.

In the past, the Westminster Blue Jay Band has performed at sporting events, pep rallies and even nursing homes, but our recent visit to the Fulton State Hospital was unlike anything the band had ever done. This semester, the band enters its fourth year of service to Westminster since its humble commencement by then part-time Wellness Center administrative assistant, Alan Nellis.

This is a statement that many have heard, in politics or in the headlines of progressive social forums on the internet. “Gender is a social construct,” an easily dismissed comment, unless you fall under the umbrella of sexual identities not captured by the blanket-binary terms of ‘’male’’ or ‘‘female.”

While Westminster has plans to build a football stadium, it has yet to improve workout facilities on campus. This means athletes and non-athletes are left to exercise in tight spaces with run-down equipment.

Transitioning from high school to college can be difficult for many reasons. Being away from home, having harder classes, and meeting countless new faces can make the first year challenging. At Westminster College, there are several programs that make this transition as easy as possible.
