The Center for Faith and Service offered three events to celebrate Halloween in the last week of October. To begin the holiday CFS paired with St. Peters Church to host an All Saints Day Mass, conducted by their very own Father Abah.

“We [Catholics]  are required to go to Mass, but often the mass schedule makes it difficult to do so. Being able to go to Mass on campus because Kiva (Chaplain and Director of CFS) so kindly set it up for us is such a great opportunity.”

On Halloween night, CFS held a cozy All Hallow’s Eve Bonfire. The Westminster community was invited to attend. Halloween treats and warm apple cider were offered to those in attendance. CFS also set up miscellaneous fall activities.

On the last day of celebrations, CFS held a communal altar that was open for contributions until the end of October. Dia de los Muertos, a two-day Hispanic holiday was also celebrated. Sophomore Cameron Gehlert decorated CFS for the special event and was the main organizer of the ofrenda. The ofrenda normally consists of a set of items that will identify the person to whom it is dedicated. The items that identify the person will include photographs, personal items that belonged to them, but can also include food which the person in question particularly enjoyed. They are most commonly built on a table with a tablecloth and china paper cut in patterns.

“I had a great time making our ofrenda. I have always had a passion for remembering the departed. My godmother is from Mexico and does not usually get to make one it was nice to include her and everyone else’s loved ones in the altar” said Gehlert.

The altar contained an assortment of authentic Mexican elements.  The ofrenda was decorated with photos, bright colored flowers, and candles.

On Oct. 29, the staff of the Center for Faith and Service (CFS) were asked to evacuate the building that the Center had resided in for the last two years. During a routine inspection, Westminster’s Plant-Ops had found structural issues with the building’s foundations. And with the help of experts, the center’s home on West 7th Street was deemed unsafe for use.
