Blue Jays Baseball Wins 1 of 3 in Season-Opening Series

After losing five starting seniors in the past year, Westminster’s baseball team picked up more than 20 new players. This new-look squad took the field for the first time this season when it played a three-game series against the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolves at home this weekend. The defending St. Louis Intercollegiate champion Blue Jays split the Saturday doubleheader and lost the rubber game on Sunday.

After a long and arduous season, the Westminster men’s basketball team is headed to the NCAA Division III Basketball Tournament for the second consecutive season. The team went 17-8 during the regular season and added two more victories this weekend to clinch the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title.

When students come to college for the first time, many of them experience a newfound feeling of freedom. With fewer classes per day than in high school and little parental control for those living away from home, students can get caught up in their own worlds and lose focus on their academic responsibilities. This feeling can linger into later semesters, as some students try to cling to it as long as they can. There is hope, however. Below are five tips to help students maintain focus on academics during the school week.

The Westminster men’s and women’s lacrosse teams played in their respective home openers on Saturday against Benedictine College (Kansas). The women lost 22-1, and the men were shut out 26-0.

Westminster’s Financial Situation Appears to be Improving

In a town hall meeting on Tuesday, President Benjamin Akande said that the administration is “realizing measurable success in efforts to strengthen the college.”

Two areas he focused on in his address were external giving and student enrollment. He said that Westminster has received an increase in monetary donations during the past year and an increase in enrollment inquiries this semester.

The Board of Trustees unanimously granted tenure to two faculty members last weekend,  Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Jane Kenney-Hunt and Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Kali Wright-Smith.

Three professors of Political Science, Dr. Tobias Gibson, Dr. John Langton and Dr. Kali Wright-Smith, held a panel discussion last week to analyze and answer questions about recent decisions made by U.S. President Donald Trump. The event was moderated by Ayush Manandhar, ’17, and sponsored by the Westminster Global Development and Progress Club and Westminster Journal for Global Progress.

New Organization Provides Students Professional Connections

The Connecting Hub’s members strive in part to help Westminster students get in touch with graduate schools and study for the Graduate Record Exam, the exam they must pass in order to get in.

Westminster’s new Connecting Hub Club was narrowly approved at the most recent Student Government Association meeting on Feb. 7. After multiple questions from senators, the club was ultimately accepted as Westminster’s newest organization, by a margin of two votes.
