Thank a WOW

For the Fall of 2019, the Remely’s Women’s Center is celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Women at Westminster College. The Center has brought many activities to our campus such as bringing motivational speaker Katie Hoff, an Olympic gold medalist who talked about her experience being a female athlete and what it means to be a relentless leader in pursuit of goals.

The Remely Center also held a note writing campaign, interns stationed throughout campus to encourage others to write thank you notes to the women in our community.  They collected over 80 thank you cards that will be distributed to students, faculty and staff this coming week. These activities continued through the month of November when Remley Women’s Advocates created a new social media campaign known as #thankaWOW.  Director of the First Year Experience, Kali Wright Smith as been a big part of planning the 40th celebration,

“We were so excited to begin our celebration of 40 Years of Women at Westminster College with the #thankaWOW campaign. It was great to see students, faculty, and staff come together to recognize and share appreciation for all of the great things that women bring to our campus. Seeing the notes of gratitude and social media posts was a really lovely demonstration of how much we, as a community, value the women of Westminster”.

The #thankaWOW campaign gives members of our campus a chance to show gratitude and thank the women of Westminster including students, faculty and staff, and alumni. Senior and Remely Intern, Missy Rolseth, saw this movement putting a spotlight those who might not always be recognized,

“The Thank a WOW campaign was a successful way for Westminster to express their gratitude for the work of women in student, faculty, and staff roles. We are celebrating 40 years of women on campus and Remley is looking for ways to highlight the efforts of women, especially for those who it often goes unnoticed.”

Many posts were shared on social media using this hashtag. It really showed our community what great things these women have offered and how much they greatly influence those around them.

40th Anniversary of Women at Westminster College called attention to many women on our campus and feelings of gratitude that we might not show everyday.

Westminster Wrestling Hosts Home Dual

BY: JAYME BERTISH

Wednesday, December 4th turned out to be one successful day for the Westminster College Blue Jay’s wrestling program. Aside from it being Westminster’s lone home dual of the 2019-2020 season, there was also some history made. For the first time in the history of the schools wrestling program, they had one member of the team compete in a women’s match. That member was Taylor Reed. Reed, a Freshman out of Battle High school, took to the mats and etched her name in the history books for the Blue Jays. In her match, she raked up the victory via pin. Her victory also played a role in the Blue Jay’s victory over Fontbonne University. It was a bit of a back and forth affair between the two, but with the help of big wins from Brock Davis, Dalton Landreth, and Sean Sax the Blue Jays grinded it out in the end. This dual victory serves as the Blue Jay’s first win of the season, moving them to 1-0. They look to continue their success as they hit the road to Naperville, Illinois where they will participate in the North Central College invitational.

How to Prepare for Finals

EDITOR IN CHIEF

As of right now you are probably stressed, regretting watching that movie when you know you should have been studying, overwhelmed, and most likely in panic mode. If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, congratulations, you have made it to finals week. As a veteran to this infamously dreaded week, I am here to provide study tips to get you through the miscellaneous tests that you may encounter.

The Out Of Class Final Essay

This is something you MUST prepare for early! If you’re reading this and don’t have a thesis prepared… it’s too late. Prepare a thesis and an outline of what you want to talk about before you sit down to write the paper. If you sit down and just try to think of things to include you will run into writer’s block, I know from experience, trust me. Also, if you prepare early for the paper you have the opportunity to ask your professor for advice or help to ensure you are on the best route to getting a good grade. Lastly, break your work up over a few days writing only a few pages a night, and the night before its due, make revisions. Reading your essay aloud allows you to find grammatical errors or any sentences that may not make sense, this is an extremely useful way to edit your paper!

The In Class Final Essay

Ah, hand cramps. If you don’t have carpal tunnel before this final, you may very well acquire it after. Often, professors will either directly give you the prompt ahead of time, or they give you a general idea of what they will be asking. Two words; early preparation. Use this information to your advantage! Just like an out of class essay, write a thesis and outline, research the things you specifically want to talk about. You have enough time out of class to think and prepare for this essay, that there should be no reason to feel unprepared.

The Multiple Choice Final

These tests are either your best friend or enemy. I mean, theoretically if you guess on a question you have a 25% chance of getting the answer correct… but that means there is still a 75% chance that you will get the question wrong. I have found that the best way to prepare for a multiple choice test is to go back and study old quizzes or tests. There is a good chance some of the same questions or very similar questions will appear on your final. Quizlet is also a very helpful tool, especially for notes and definitions. There are games that you can play on Quizlet to test your knowledge, as well as the always useful flashcards.

The biggest and most important tip I have for finals is preparing early. Late nights cramming in the library for a class that you have been taking over the last sixteen weeks is only a slightly effective method. Rest is crucial before a big exam and while studying. IF you feel a little sleepy, take a 15 minute nap and come back to studying. Physical and mental health is important, take care of yourself! Good luck with finals, may the odds be ever in your favor.
