Students Gear Up for Spring Break

Westminster students eagerly await March 20-24 as it signals a week off from school for spring break. Students will have no classes the entire week, but college offices will remain open each day except for Friday, March 24.

With the current extended forecast for Fulton showing rain and clouds for most of the week, many Westminster students look to escape the dreary weather and head south.

Senior Amanda Kiso said that she is going to drive to New Orleans for the weekend and will spend the week in Destin, Florida.

“I’m going with four other girls from Westminster, so we’re renting a minivan,” she said.

Another popular destination for a warm spring break is Cancun, Mexico. Juniors Tabitha Tiefenthaler, Kristen McMillian, Alex Ottoline and Gabby Osborn and sophomore Jenny Blake will be spending the week there at the Crown Paradise Club Resort.

“I know we want to wake up early and watch the sunrise a few mornings,” Tiefenthaler said. “Jenny and I are also going running on the beach.”

Meanwhile, some students plan to spend the break with family.

Golly Easterly, ’18, said that she is going to travel with her mother to California’s Sonoma Valley.

“Maybe I’ll bring you back a redwood,” she offered jokingly.

Although not typically thought of as a spring break location, Haley Short, ’17, will be heading to Utah with her father.

“We’re going hiking for about five days,” she said. “I think we are going to do 2 to 9 miles a day, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Even students who do not have elaborate trips planned are still excited for a week off from school.

Khaled Khalili, ‘19, who will stay on campus during most of the break, said that his plans range from catching up on sleep and watching TV to reading ahead and completing a video project. “I will get the chance to edit and finalize the video that will be shown at the Westminster Women’s Conference,” he said.

The conference will be held in Mueller Student Center on Thursday, April 6, at 5 p.m.

Students also find that just going home for the week is an appealing way to spend the time off classes.

Barrett Houska, ’20, said that he is going to go back home to Arnold, Missouri.

“I’m ready to sleep and see my family since I haven’t seen them all semester,” he said. “I know we’re going to an escape room so I’m looking forward to that.”

Spencer Theis, ’17, said that he is happy to be heading to his hometown of Dallas, Texas.

“It will be warmer than it is here and there’ll be no snow on the ground,” he said, adding that he “can’t wait” to dine at Whataburger, a fast food restaurant chain that does not have stores as far north as Fulton.

After the break, it will be back to business for students, as they will have only six weeks before finals week and graduation.
